The region around Ede and Ibadan in Nigeria was part of the ancient Oyo empire for three centuries. Orisha Shango was of particular importance to its rulers. Shrines for Shango, (god of thunder and lightning), where prominent places, both in the palace grounds and in important lineage compounds. The shrine belonging to the Chief Priest of the village was considered to be the most sacred and elaborate in nature, called Ile Olorionshango, or “ the house of the Chief Priest Shango”. This altar piece came from such a house in the city of Ede, and was carved by the recognized Jagun family workshop. The Jagun workshop along with that of the Abogunde family are considered to be the top two acclaimed carving groups in Ede whose work was identified and achieved recognition beginning in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Their master works are known and recognized internationally like those of the Adeshina family of Efon-Alaiye, or Olowo of Ise.
