The figure depicts a junior Shango priest diviner carrying a bag over his left shoulder, and an Iroke Ifa or Iro Ifa in his left hand, to call on the ancestors while tapping on the Ifa board, and a thunderbolt in his right hand. Atop of his head is the double balanced thunder axe ( edun ara) identifying him as a follower of Shango. The scarification on his face ( meta aagheri), repeated on the front and back of the axe, is that of the ancient royal Oyo lineage. The indigo color of his hair alludes to his deep knowledge and understanding of Ifa ( awo).
The indigo color attest to great wisdom. It is compared to a pot of (indigo) dye “ whose hidden depths cannot be seen”.
